.....misshapen chaos of well-seeming forms
strange and sweet, sorrow and solitude.

I'm currently writing from the Philippines.

My heart is breaking as I'm watching all the Haiti coverage on TV.

I remember the 1994 Northridge Earthquake very clearly. I live in Northridge, and that earthquake was a 6.7 magnitude. I was about 6.5 years old and my younger sister was 2.5. She was crying nonstop, which I can't forget. My dad made us wear construction helmets (which he somehow had in his closet), and we all wore tennis shoes.

This may sound silly, but we hid under the kitchen table and prayed. My parents have a statue (about 2 feet tall) of Jesus in their room on a cabinet. And this was freaky, everything fell all over the place - it was a complete mess. But somehow, this Jesus statue landed on the floor, and was STILL standing upright...

Apparently, the Northridge earthquake was one of the costliest natural disasters in the U.S., costing over $20b in damage, including a collapsed freeway. There were 72 deaths, with over 9,000 injured.

And today, I'm looking at the Haiti earthquake, which was a little stronger than the Northridge earthquake (7.0). But Haiti is NOT California. It's the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Port-Au-Prince is the very densely populated capital. Apparently, it is reported that over 100,000 people have died. The whole city is destroyed - the Presidential Palace, the National Assembly building, the main Cathedral, among many other structures, are gone. Can you IMAGINE the White House being destroyed? It's unthinkable. It's unreal, I really can't believe it.

I know in situations like these, we feel helpless. We feel insulated in our location which has not been affected. It's so devastating, personal worries and concerns seem so inconsequential to a disaster like this...

CNN has compiled a good database of legitimate relief organizations and charities: http://cnn.com/impact
I am looking at organizations right now to donate a little bit.

And in case you haven't already, text "HAITI" to "90999" and a donation of $10 will be given to the Red Cross to help with relief efforts in Haiti. Please spread the word.

My thoughts, heart, and prayers go out to the victims of the Haiti earthquake, and to the first responders and those helping with the relief. I hope the organizations, volunteers, and the government can ensure that the aid/money/food etc goes directly to those in need.

If you have a digital camera, I need your help!

WHAT: All you need to do is TAKE ONE PHOTO throughout the course of a day showing how YOU SEE PEACE IN YOUR DAILY LIFE.
(You must take the photo, not find it online).

This could be ANYTHING, like the beach, people holding hands, you and your friends hanging out, art, an event going on, ANYTHING as long as it shows how you see peace in your daily life.

And then E-MAIL (tinasamson@gmail.com)
this photo to me by SATURDAY, with a BRIEF ONE-LINE DESCRIPTION of why you took a photo of it. For example, for a picture of the ocean, you
can be like "the ocean makes me feel relaxed with nature, and helps clear my mind, giving me a sense of peace."

THEN, your photo may be FEATURED in an ART EXHIBIT! I will choose some photos, have them printed and mounted on a board, along with the brief descriptions underneath the photos. This will be displayed at CAJE in IV (a local coffee place) next week, along with a blank posterboard that people can write their opinions on, and how they see peace in their daily life.

WHY: I am in a Communication Peace class, where we have to create our own definition of peace, create a peace theory, and then conduct an original peace project and write about it. For part of my definition, I see peace as being mindful and aware of our own living as well as the living of others - which means to slow down, be conscious of simple every day occurrences, like breathing. People are always rushing and stressed
out, it's good to really enjoy every day simple manifestations of peace. It will be cool to showcase an exhibit with different people's photographic interpretations.

Please try to e-mail me your photo and brief description by SATURDAY MAY 30TH, which is very soon so bring your camera out and take a photo!

THANK YOU SO MUCH! E-mail submissions to TINASAMSON@GMAIL.COM and please tell your friends to take photos as well!

wow, 2005 is over. what a great momentous year.

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2006 EVERYBODY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
wake me up from this dream

i had an amazing day yesterday. being home after 2 days and 5 months = bliss.

leaving home at 10:30 am. noticing different things in the valley! (countdown on the pedestrian traffic thing and wendy's has a marquee), going to cpk to catch up like old times, driving up to the top of reseda + drinking apple cider in pretty plastic champagne flutes + listening to awesome music + standing on a hill and overlooking the valley = OMG WOW hehe, just the fact of driving around the valley with all its traffic and wonderful sights = excitement, going to the northridge mall (after not being there forever, and noticing changes in the mall too, ie bath and body works moved, holister, disney store) and catching up with other friends, chatting outside borders, eating appetizers at wood ranch and not giving enough tip because we are all poor starving college students hehe, going to chelsea's house and playing piano while matt's trying to mess it up haha, driving up to stunt rd in uber fog, but having fun in the fog darkness hehe, but the fog cleared momentarily and we could see stars AMAZING even if it was cold but huddling under a blanket like kairos times, and playing lovely stupid games in the car while still up there on stunt rd, going to denny's to get drinks and be merry and me not knowing the difference between sexes at the bathroom haha, bob's house for uber fun with mao and other card games + lots of pics galore where we look drunk, but we were all sober (which i will tag/put on facebook soon), driving home by myself at 2am blasting music with nobody on the road all in familiar terrain = ultimate bliss

man, i love this place and have missed it so much.
